What is Pride Month?
Pride Month is a celebration of LGBTQ rights that showcases the LGBTQ community. Members dress up and march in a Pride Month parade, meet members of the cities, discuss concerns in the LGBTQ world, and hold educational events to highlight the progress of gay acceptance worldwide and combat any attempts to strip away these hard-fought rights.
Pride Month events occur nationwide in major and minor cities throughout June, though some cities in hotter areas may hold them earlier or later to minimize heat-stroke risk. People interested in these events often stay for days or weeks and pack a suitcase full of costumes and other celebratory items. The idea behind Pride Month is for LGBTQ people to take pride in themselves.
Pride Month reminds the world that gay people live among them everywhere and have just as much right to happiness and love as anyone else. Pride is also a critical time for members outside the community to show their support. In addition, many non-LGBTQ people participate in Pride events yearly, making these city-wide celebrations a crucial step forward for gay rights.
When is Gay Pride Month? When Did Pride Month Start? Why in June?

The first Pride Month event took place in 1970 on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. These riots occurred in Greenwich Village in June 1969 when police officers stormed the Stonewall Inn and arrested patrons simply because they were LGBTQ. This raid infuriated the community, and eventually, they began fighting back, attacking police officers and creating a days-long riot.
While other riots against police brutality in the LGBTQ community had occurred before Stonewall, it triggered the first "Gay Pride" event the following year. People marched down Christopher Street and expanded this event to multiple cities. At first, these events were heavily suppressed by communities, but as LGBTQ acceptance became more widespread, they are now accepted and heavily advertised.
In fact, these events have become so big that some in the LGBTQ community are worried about overt commercialism in many sectors. However, this progress has led to broader expansions of the movement, such as Disability Pride Month in July. We at The Parking Spot follow national and global changes like these and adjust our services accordingly. So stay tuned to our page to learn more.
Celebrate Pride Month Your Way
Most people celebrate pride month in a variety of different ways. However, parades are the most fun and common way of celebrating during this month. Members of the LGBTQ community will march, sing, dance, interact with others on the street, and provide an exciting experience.
That said, pride month also includes more serious events, such as educational experiences and talks with people affected by homophobia.
