When is Gay Pride Month? When Did Pride Month Start? Why in June?

The first Pride Month event took place in 1970 on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. These riots occurred in Greenwich Village in June 1969 when police officers stormed the Stonewall Inn and arrested patrons simply because they were LGBTQ. This raid infuriated the community, and eventually, they began fighting back, attacking police officers and creating a days-long riot.
While other riots against police brutality in the LGBTQ community had occurred before Stonewall, it triggered the first "Gay Pride" event the following year. People marched down Christopher Street and expanded this event to multiple cities. At first, these events were heavily suppressed by communities, but as LGBTQ acceptance became more widespread, they are now accepted and heavily advertised.
In fact, these events have become so big that some in the LGBTQ community are worried about overt commercialism in many sectors.
