Memorial Day weekend marks the start of summer, and what better way to celebrate than taking a festive trip with your family? Mystic Seaport Events Tucked away in Mystic, Connecticut near the Mystic River, the maritime museum Mystic Seaport is the perfect travel spot for both educational and celebratory fun during Memorial Day weekend. Visitors can celebrate the warm weather with Mystic Seaport’s Salute to Summer event. Enjoy 19th-century activities, such as vintage lawn games and horse-and-carriage rides. You can even get some experience rowing a whaleboat. This event will run May 23-24. On May 25, attend a Decoration Day ceremony, which is also held at Mystic Seaport. Decoration Day later became Memorial Day and honored those who died during the Civil War. This commemoration will include a church service, ceremonial wreath laying, and other events to memorialize Civil War soldiers. Kerrville Folk Festival Listen to some amazing music at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas this Memorial Day weekend. The Kerrville Folk Festival features more than just folk music, too--acoustic rock, jazz, and bluegrass are just the beginning. What really stands out is this festival’s commitment to showcasing both experienced and new singer-songwriters. This event goes on for 18 days; it starts on May 21 and doesn’t end until June 7 so there’s plenty of time to take advantage of everything the festival offers. Figawi Race Weekend The 44th Annual Figawi Race Weekend is another great way to greet the arrival of summer. This is a well-known boat race where crews race from Cape Cod to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Watch the race on Saturday, May 23 and cheer on your favorite crew. After the last boat has arrived, you can explore Nantucket Island, which has shops and restaurants. If you haven’t had your fill of races at that point, there’s another boat race Sunday for high school students, while Monday’s race allows the boats and teams to return to Cape Cod.
