Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) Guide

ABOUT SLC
Owned by the city of Salt Lake City and administered by the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, the Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is located about four miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. SLC is the 23rd busiest airport in North America and the 85th busiest in the world. More than 340 flights depart daily to 95 nonstop destinations. Among US airports, SLC was ranked first for on time departures and arrivals and first for percentage of cancellations as of April 2017.

SLC’s story began in 1911 when a site for an airfield was chosen on Basque Flats. It was named for Spanish-French sheep herders who worked the fields in the then desolate area of the Salt Lake Valley, where a cinder-covered landing was subsequently created. For several years, the new field was mainly for training and aerobatic flights. This changed when the U.S. Post Office began using the airport for air mail service.

As of 2019, SLC is currently undergoing a $3.6 billion redevelopment program, the first phase of which will be completed in 2020. The project is funded by user fees. No local tax dollars are being spent on the project.

SLC spans over 7,700 acres and has four runways. Today, the airport is home to Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, SkyWest Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue.
